The Australian Fencing Federation notes with sadness the passing of Australian Olympic fencer John Humphreys on 14th September 2017 aged 85.

John was an Australian National Epee Champion (1962 and 1963) and dual Olympian, representing Australia in epee in 1960 (Rome) and 1964 (Tokyo).

John also represented Australia at the World Fencing Championships in Montreal (1967) and Grenoble (1974), and at the Commonwealth Games in Perth (1962) and Jamaica (1966).

John continued fencing as a veteran, most recently winning the 70+ men’s epee event at the 2006 Australian and Oceania Open and Veteran Fencing Championships.

A Queenslander who played a role in establishing the original state fencing organisation, John was a life member of the Queensland Fencing Association.

A service celebrating John’s life will be held at Centenary Memorial Gardens, Wacol Station Road, Sumner, Brisbane, commencing at 1 pm on Monday, 25th September, 2017. (source: http://tributes.couriermail.com.au/notice/440912010
