Update on international competition
The International Fencing Federation (FIE) and Fencing Confederation of Asia (FCA) have made announcements regarding international competition. The correspondence can be read below and is summarised here.
2021 Cadet and Junior Zonal Championships
The 2021 cadet and junior zonal championships will not be held. For Australian fencers, this affects the Asian Junior and Cadet Fencing Championships previously scheduled for February 2021 in Tashkent (UZB).
Qualifying competitions for the Tokyo Olympic Games
The remaining qualifying competitions for the Tokyo Olympic Games are as follows:
Sabre World Cups (men and women): Budapest (HUN), 10-14 March
Epée World Cups (men and women): Kazan (RUS), 19-23 March
Foil Grand Prix (men and women): Doha (QAT), 26-28 March
Given the continuing health and travel risks arising from the COVID-19 global pandemic, the AFF will not enter any Australian athletes into these events.
Asian zone qualifying events for the Tokyo Olympic Games
The Asian zone Olympic qualifying competition will be held in:
Seoul, Korea on April 15th and 16th 2021
In a departure from recent practice, the Olympic qualifying event has been de-coupled from the Asian Zone Championships, ensuring a reduced number of athletes and officials attending for a two-day tournament. The Asian Fencing Championships will be scheduled for some time in June 2021.
An announcement by the AFF regarding Australian athlete nominations for the Asian Zone Olympic Qualifying event can be viewed at this link.
